The Consulate General of Israel presents
The Last Jews of Libya
Monday, December 14th at 7:00pm – FREE!
Once upon a time, the lands of the Middle East were home to a vibrant communities of Jewish scholars, merchants, musicians, athletes, home-makers and more. Even before Israel declared its independence in 1948, these communities came under attack by their neighbors and close to a million men, women and children were forced to leave their millennia-old homes. The State of Israel observes an annual day of reflection on November 30th to commemorate their stories and their rich heritage.
Please join us for a FREE screening of The Last Jews of Libya, which tells one such story through the eyes of the Roumani family. Narrated by Isabella Rossellini, the fifty-minute film is the tale of an ancient community transformed by modern European culture, buffeted by Fascism and Arab nationalism, and ultimately saved through the strength of its Jewish tradition and faith.
The movie and event will be introduced by Consul General Yaron Sideman and followed by a brief presentation by a local member of the Mizrachi community, who will share his/her personal story.
Light refreshments will be served after the presentations.
