Music fans of a certain age may recall salad days at 23 East Lancaster Avenue in Ardmore, PA. We’re talking the preppycrunchy ’80s and early ’90s here, when bands such as Phish, Buddy Guy, Derek Trucks, Dave Matthews Band, Blues Traveler, Hootie & The Blowfish, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Joan Osborne, John Hiatt, The Hooters, Tommy Conwell & The Young Rumblers, Cheap Trick, Los Lobos, The Cherry Poppin Daddys and Merle Saunders would pull up and rock it Main Line-style. (Though none of them have aged as beautifully as you have, dear.) But by the mid-90s, it was all over for the 23 East which then became Brownies 23 East, and then… nothing. For a long time. Now, partners Bryan Dilworth of Bonfire Booking, Richard Kardon of Point Entertainment and Joe Rufo of Brownies 23 East are prepping Ardmore Music Hall to open in the fall at that same address. With a flexible capacity that maxes out at 600 (but can be configured to feel intimate at 250), the venue will be seeing a complete re-do, both physically and philosophically: You’ll be seeing nationals there, as well as locals, but yep, it’ll also still be very jam-band-friendly.
