Foodapalooza , the culinary event of the season

Published: Monday, April 08, 2013

By Cheryl Allison

Foodapalooza , the culinary event of the season, took place Friday, April 5, as chefs from restaurants from Ardmore to Bryn Mawr showed off their skills for a capacity crowd at Haverford Estates retirement community in Haverford. The annual event, celebrating five years in 2013, is the major fundraiser for First Friday Main Line.

A panel of judges including Lower Merion Township Commissioner Cheryl Gelber, Haverford Township Commissioner Jeff Heilmann, Karen Toole-Ebbert of Lower Merion Community Network, Jamie and Jodi Lokoff of Milkboy Recording and Coffee, and Main Line Media News reporter Cheryl Allison had the pleasant task of tasting and rating specialty dishes from 10 Main Line restaurants.

Contest entries were scored for presentation, taste and originality. In close voting – several restaurants tied for fourth place – the winners are:

First place: Chef Mark Gellert of Haverford Estates for his pecan-encrusted salmon over pear slaw with whipped spiced yams.

Second place: Chef Owen McCaffrey of A La Maison for his striped bass over creamy polenta.

Third place: Chef Justin Helmer of Gullifty’s for his short ribs over parmesan potatoes.

Other entries, in alphabetical order, were:

Barbacoa: pulled pork sliders

Cricket Catering: grilled chicken with scalloped potato

Daly-Angkor:   curried chicken.  (The new Thai-Cambodian restaurant is set to open in about two weeks at 845A W. Lancaster Ave., Bryn Mawr.

Firinji:  lamb with stewed vegtables

Jack MCShea’s: Irish Tommy, Black & White sausage with Guiness sauce

John Henry’s Pub: lamb chop

Mediterranean Grill: chicken kabob with ottimo salad.

Also serving delicious food were A Taste of Olive, Di Bruno Brothers, NDulge Cupcake Boutique and Whole Foods Market.

Guests were also able to sample Ardmore-brewed beers from Tired Hands Brewery and a selection of wines from Majestic Wine & Spirits.

The next First Friday Main Line event is scheduled for May 3 at venues in Ardmore, Haverford and Bryn Mawr.  Check back with www.firstfridaymainline.com for details

busConnections…that’s how you grow your business.  So, where do you start?  Here are 4 tips for making connections within your creative community to help grow your business:

Tip #1: Reach out and connect with one new friend this week on Twitter, Facebook or Pinterest that share a common business interest as you.  Do this each week!

Tip #2: Write a blog post this week…reach out to a blogger that interests you and pitch a topic to them where you can share your experience. This is a great way to build exposure to your business while sharing your expertise with their community!

Tip #3: Share and promote others just as much as you promote yourself. Working toward building success not only for you, but for your fellow artisans as well will help you in the long run and grow your business faster than doing it alone.

Tip #4: Connect with a fellow small business owner within your community to get together and share ideas and brainstorm to help one another achieve your goals!  Do this activity on a regular basis not only helps your business…it’s fun!

What are some tips you use to connect with your creative community?
