July // Shakespeare in the Cemetery: Richard III

There are no gods in Shakespeare. There are only Kings.” – Jan KottThe royal house is decimated. Thirty years of civil war has laid waste to a nation, and the blood of thousands has been spilt, all to answer a single question: who shall wear the crown? To some it might seem a small matter. What difference does it make whose temples are encircled in cold metal, or whose brow is pressed down by the weight of jewels? Surely now, with so few left to quarrel, we will have peace. And yet one man’s unbridled ambition will not let him rest…This summer Laurel Hill and The Mechanical Theater welcome you to land godforsaken and ghost-haunted. Shakespeare’s brooding character study asks us as it has for centuries: in a world where there are no gods – only kings- can we be reconciled with each other? Or shall we kill each other to the last man, and the ghosts inherit what’s left? What better place than amid the tombs to tell Shakespeare’s haunting tale of lust, ambition, intrigue and murder? A thrilling twist on the traditional “Shakespeare in the Park” motif, this production of King Richard III is directed by Josh Hitchens and features Ryan Walter, Neena Boyle, Megan Edelman, Rachel Gluck, Josh McLucas, and Loretta Vasile. Bring your own blankets, beach chairs, picnics, and/or beverages. Two weekends of performances will take place on July 15, 16, 22 & 23. All performances begin at 7:30pm (with prescheduled rain dates of July 17 and 24). Check in takes place at Laurel Hill Cemetery’s Gatehouse entrance at 3822 Ridge Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19132. Free parking is located in the lot across the street from the Gatehouse. The cost is $20/person; or $17/members. Advanced tickets are strongly suggested. Tickets can be purchased at the door or online.

July 23rd – LMPD Coffee With A Cop

coffee and conversation with a cop
“Coffee with the Cops” event. Saturday, July 23, 2016, with community members at the Ardmore McDonald’s, from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The event is a chance to come together in an informal, neutral space to discuss community issues, build relationships, and enjoy some coffee compliments of the LMPD.

All community members are invited to attend, at 111 W. Lancaster Avenue, Ardmore. Please contact the Crime Prevention Unit with questions, at (610) 645-6240.

Coffee with a Cop provides a unique opportunity for community members to ask questions and learn more about the

department’s work in Lower Merion’s neighborhoods.

The majority of contacts law enforcement has with the public happen during emergencies, or emotional situations. Those situations are not always the most effective times for relationship building with the community and some community members may feel that officers are unapproachable on the street. Coffee with a Cop breaks down barriers and allows for a relaxed, one-on-one interaction.

“Residents who have attended so far have really enjoyed interacting with our officers,” said Lower Merion Police Superintendent Michael McGrath. “We’ve found these events to be invaluable in helping residents feel comfortable asking questions, bringing concerns, or simply getting to know our officers with no agenda or speeches.”

Coffee with a Cop is a national initiative supported by The United States Department of Justice, Office of Community Oriented Policing Services. Similar events are increasingly being held across the country, as local police departments strive to make lasting connections with the communities they serve.

The program aims to advance the practice of community policing through improving relationships between police officers and community members – one cup of coffee at a time.

Narberth’s Fourth of July Celebration is the biggest and best July 4th event on the Main Line. Thousands attend this legendary event in Narberth Park each year, often tripling the population of the tiny Borough for a day. This year’s event will feature the 75th annual fireworks display. Daytime events from 10am-2pm include a baby parade, sports contests, races, and a pie-eating contest. The daytime festivities also include carnival games, face painting, speed pitch, a dunking booth, obstacle courses, dart toss and a fun house. This year, for the first time, the daytime events will also feature a mechanical bull ride!

There’s plenty of festival food available during the day, like pretzels, popcorn, pizza, cotton candy and water ice.

The evening concert starts at 7:30 pm. Food and ice cream will be available in festival booths. Once it gets dark, music will accompany the Main Line’s biggest fireworks display.

There is no charge to attend the daytime festivities or the fireworks, but everyone is encouraged to make a donation. The events are entirely funded by voluntary contributions from the crowd, the residents, and the local business community. All funds raised go to support either this event or other events and activities for local children.
