Foodapalooza , the culinary event of the season, took place Friday, April 5, as chefs from restaurants from Ardmore to Bryn Mawr showed off their skills for a capacity crowd at Haverford Estates retirement community in Haverford. The annual event, celebrating five years in 2013, is the major fundraiser for First Friday Main Line.

A panel of judges including Lower Merion Township Commissioner Cheryl Gelber, Haverford Township Commissioner Jeff Heilmann, Karen Toole-Ebbert of Lower Merion Community Network, Jamie and Jodi Lokoff of Milkboy Recording and Coffee, and Main Line Media News reporter Cheryl Allison had the pleasant task of tasting and rating specialty dishes from 10 Main Line restaurants.

Contest entries were scored for presentation, taste and originality. In close voting – several restaurants tied for fourth place – the winners are:

First place: Chef Mark Gellert of Haverford Estates for his pecan-encrusted salmon over pear slaw with whipped spiced yams.

Second place: Chef Owen McCaffrey of A La Maison for his striped bass over creamy polenta.

Third place: Chef Justin Helmer of Gullifty’s for his short ribs over parmesan potatoes.

Other entries, in alphabetical order, were:

Barbacoa: pulled pork sliders

Cricket Catering: grilled chicken with scalloped potato

Daly-Angkor:   curried chicken.  (The new Thai-Cambodian restaurant is set to open in about two weeks at 845A W. Lancaster Ave., Bryn Mawr.

Firinji:  lamb with stewed vegtables

Jack MCShea’s: Irish Tommy, Black & White sausage with Guiness sauce

John Henry’s Pub: lamb chop

Mediterranean Grill: chicken kabob with ottimo salad.

Also serving delicious food were A Taste of Olive, Di Bruno Brothers, NDulge Cupcake Boutique and Whole Foods Market.

Guests were also able to sample Ardmore-brewed beers from Tired Hands Brewery and a selection of wines from Majestic Wine & Spirits.

The next First Friday Main Line event is scheduled for May 3 at venues in Ardmore, Haverford and Bryn Mawr.  Check back with www.firstfridaymainline.com for details

EGCG, In Green Tea And Red Wine, Could Play Role In Fighting Alzheimers.

Ecgc Alzheimers

A powerful Alzheimer’s fighter could be right in your mug.

A new study in the Journal of Biological Chemistry shows that an antioxidant called EGCG, which is found in green tea and red wine, is able to stop amyloid-beta proteins — known to play a role in Alzheimer’s — from attaching to and killing brain cells in a lab setting. (READ ARTICLE)

Smash!

A plate shattered behind us just as we were settling into our hunter-plaid booth, and the burst was loud enough to somehow cut through the ear-busting din. But it was the sight of the crockery exploding that caught my eye, the pretty white china traced with a border and name, “The Saint James,” in shards across the floor. (READ MORE)

Firinji…a mediterranean gem on the Main Line #Firinji

On my way back from the gym last night I was craving food that was fresh, and healthy. Bored with the usual food scene on the Main Line, I decided to stop at Firinji. What I ordered was tasty and really hit the spot. I started with a small fresh green salad topped with feta cheese, olives, a lite dressing and grilled bread on the side. Next was a red lentil soup. I liked that the base was made with a puree’ of lentils–no added heavy cream. Finally, chicken kabob with a side of rice and beans in a tomato-base sauce, and grilled veggies! The chicken was tender, moist and flavorful. It was served with two condiment sauces, a mild yogurt and spicy red. I am not clear on how exactly how the food was seasoned, but it was beyond delicious.

The owner (Budo) is a really wonderful guy. Like me, he enjoys talking about food, and we chatted about his past. He originates from Turkey, is a St Joe’s graduate, and has worked in some of the finest restaurants in the country. It shows in the preparation of the food and excellent customer service he delivers. He is a father of two adorable little boys under age 5, who happened to stop by with his wife. They seemed quite comfortable hanging out for a bit, so I think it is safe to say that this place is definitely kid-friendly!

Firinji is a real culinary gem on the Main Line. IMHO. If you are looking for a place that offers fresh, tasty food, and really cares about their customer, you should go. I had a fantastic experience. I give Firinji five stars! (★★★★★)
